Behind the Name Heartlines

Even after 4 years now it still amazes me how a business name that I agonized over for MONTHS has turned out to be so perfect.

It was inspired from a Florence + the Machine song by the same name and the line that says  “Just keep following the heartlines on your hand, ‘cause I am.”

You see, I’ve always tended to overanalyze and overcomplicate just about anything and everything.  I mean, if I can possibly find a way to make my life more complicated…somehow I manage to do it.  As a kid, I was known for my intellect and it’s SO easy for me to get stuck in my head.  To retreat to the safety of my brain.

But following my heart…listening to my intuition?  That was strange magic.  Powerful and uncomfortable and yet whenever I did I always landed in a better place.

Intentions, Reflections & Goals

What is it about birthdays that make us all reflective?  I've got a birthday coming up on the 27th of October.  I'm turning 36, which seems random enough, but it feels big.

This year has held some massive shifts for me.  And I don't think I'm the only one.  When I look at my newsfeed or talk to my friends I feel like everyone has big changes happening.

So much joy (5 babies, 2 weddings & more) & every flavour of heartbreak.

This year for my birthday I'm going to my first shamanic retreat.  I'm sooo excited to participate in the ceremonies & fellowship.  And honestly, I'm a little bit excited for the kid-free, biz-free time.

We were asked to set our intentions for the weekend (maybe *this* was the trigger for all that reflection).  I came up with 2 things.

Entrepreneurship Will Challenge All Your Beliefs

Entrepreneurship has challenged every belief I've ever had - about myself, my life, the world & the way things work.  It's given me the opportunity to critically examine what I thought about work, money, relationships, control, time, productivity, self-doubt, literally all the things.

It's shown me I have far greater power than I EVER realised.  Not only to shape my business & the work that I do.  But the way I structure my day.  The people I surround myself with. And the way I respond to life (clearly that last one is still a work in progress).

Trust Falls, Saying No & the Truth Behind Shiny Exteriors

How's 2017 going so far?  Mine got off to a crazy, hectic start (all of which was apparently predicted in the stars if I had bothered to read my horoscope - but I didn't.)  The craziness was mostly due to my internet unexpectedly going on vacation (without any advanced notice).  Leaving me with multiple requests from potential clients, 1/2 dozen scheduled meetings, zero WiFi and a quickly unravelling sanity.  Holiday hours + kids home on break meant a forced tech cleanse for almost 3 days!!!

Deep breath.

I survived.  Because entrepreneurship is constantly challenging my flexibility and adaptability.  And ever-so-slowly I'm learning the art of going-with-the-flow.  It's a #workinprogress really.

But my downtime naturally led to the ever cliched but unavoidable year-end reflections and future planning that we ALL OBSESS over when the calendar year flips.

I'm not going to plague you with all my ponderings.  By now I assume you've read your fill of those posts.  But I did want to share a few kernels of truth that popped up for me.

Last year I managed to double my gross income.

That sounds super impressive, doesn't it?  If I was your average biz blogger babe I'd leave it there so you'd be in awe of my accomplishment.  Or I'd drone on and on about how I did it.  Though not in any sort of way that you could repeat it.  Aren't you glad this isn't your average blog?

BRAVING the Customer Relationship: How to Build a Trustworthy Brand

Maybe it was her kind eyes, easy laugh or the way she could tell a great story but when we met, I immediately like her.  Have you ever met someone and instantly clicked?  Felt unabashedly at ease?  Wanted to share your stories in return?

People react to brands and businesses the same way, don't they?  Some brands quickly earn the trust of their clients and customers.  While others seem to attract only skeptics or one-time users.

Building a brand that people instantly connect to and trust is essential.  We don't have the luxury of a big name that everyone knows.  And building trust online without the concrete sensory experience of a bricks & mortar shop can be especially challenging.  So, how do you build a trustworthy brand from the ground up?

A couple of weeks ago I talked about how I'm learning to trust myself more and more every day, especially when it comes to following my heart and running my own business.

I also mentioned this talk by the incomparable Bréné Brown, who discusses the Anatomy of Trust and gives us a language for breaking down this tiny word with more baggage than a Hollywood diva.

This time, as I was watching again, and taking notes I realised how B.R.A.V.I.N.G. could be applied to any relationship.

Even your customer relationship.

Let's see how BRAVING your customer relationship can lead to a trustworthy brand.

Trust, Decision-Making & What it Really Means to Follow Your Heart While Building A Business

I thought I learned this lesson 18 years ago.  Standing on a stranger's porch, ignoring the voice of an angel that said as clearly as any corporeal person, "RUN!"

But I was just turning 17 and thought I might be losing my mind.  And although it caught my attention.  To the point of looking around for the source of the voice.  To the point of hesitating before entering the house.

I didn't listen.

And it was the single biggest regret of my life.  The most difficult lesson I've ever learned.
