Music + Word Flow

When I need to get into a good writing groove it helps to pick out some tunes.  When it's writing for me (like copy for my website, this blog or that novel that will never see the light of day) choosing what to listen to is easy.

For example I can NEVER get enough of Florence + the Machine.  That voice...those drums.  I can't even explain what this does to me.  And the lyrics?  For the rest of your career Florence - I'm in.

Or sometimes I'll even brave a curated playlist (usually Indie music) in the hopes of finding a new band or song to add to my repertoire.

The right melody can boost my word flow.

And we all have those songs.  You know those stop-whatever-you're-doing-right-this-SECOND-so-you-can-sing-loudly-and-off-key-while-moving-your-less-than-graceful-body-awkwardly-around-the-room songs.

And the song is SO good you are completely unapologetic for the above behaviour?  Those are the songs I play whenever I need to feel inspired.

Music seems to be intrinsically tied to my creativity.

Now I've been thinking...I know what to listen to when I want to sound like me.

But I wonder...

If I need to adopt a different voice, as a copywriter often does, maybe I should listen to different music?

I could listen to music based on the emotion I'm trying to create in the reader.  So dance music for excitement or Rage Against the Machine for...well...outrage.  Oooh I just did some Googling and there are literally hundred of playlists based on a single emotion - except for fear.

If I'm writing an About page for a client I could listen to music that matches their brand.  Hmmm maybe I should add a what's your favourite band question to my creative brief ;)

This is definitely an experiment I'm going to try.  I figure it can go one of 2 ways either 1) I learn different kinds of music help me craft different kinds of voices or 2) I learn that my writing mojo is tied to only the kind of music I like.

Do you have any music + emotion suggestions for me?  Is there a band that never fails to leave you feeling creatively inspired that I just HAVE to check out?  Leave it in the comments.
